Flag Football Equipment

by Kathleen Gagne

The most important difference in gear between flag football and contact football is the use of a flag belt. If an offensive player is in possession of the ball and a defensive player "pulls" the ball carrier's flag, the play ends. A series of rules determine how and when a flag can be pulled. At the same time, there are specific guidelines about "guarding" the flag illegally to avoid having it taken away.

The "standard" footballs used in contact football games can also be used in flag football games. There are, however, also a wide range of colorful footballs made of different materials that may also be appropriate. Flag footballs vary is size and even shape depending on the age of the players and the specific use of the ball (such as balls designed for training purposes).

Creating a Field

Depending again on the age and experience of the players, some teams elect to purchase a comprehensive flag football field package that can be used just about anywhere there is sufficient grass. These kits can be used for both training and games. They may include kicking tees, soft pylons, stripers, headgear, and yard and down markers.

Clothing items include scrimmage jerseys and team and officials' pinnies. Team member gear is available for both children and adults, while officials' gear is designed for adults only. Other items that may be necessary during practice and at games include officials' whistles, penalty flags, and inflation devices for footballs.
