Flag Football Flags

by Kathleen Gagne

There are almost as many flag football flags as there are teams that want to play. There are flags for junior teams all the way through college and other adult teams. The basic difference is in the size of the flags, as almost all of the flags in use today are made with some form of velcro attachment. This allows flags to be "pulled" off the required belt easily and reduces the possibility of injury.

The cost of flag football belts is amazingly low, with a package of up to twelve running under $20. Flags for an entire game can be purchased in handy cases with room for footballs and other gear, such as whistles, penalty flags, and down markers. Team members will usually wear flags of a specific color both in practice and during official games.

Flag Football: Flag Belt Training

One of the key skills every flag football player needs to learn early on is how to manage his or her flag and how to "pull" a flag from an opposing player. For example, an offensive player carrying the football may be tempted to use his or her arm to protect the flag and keep the play alive. Such a maneuver is actually illegal.

The defensive player who is attempting to pull the flag may not push the offensive player or knock the player down while grabbing for the flag. The primary reason for the existence of so many rules related to the flag is player safety. Every person on the team needs to know how and when to pull a flag to ensure that the game is played in a manner that encourages fairness and reduces the risk of injuries.
