Flag Football Playbooks

by Kathleen Gagne

Today there are many different types of flag football leagues in existence. These leagues may operate under a number of different sets of rules. Adult leagues, co-ed leagues, college leagues, and professional leagues all require unique playbooks.

Regulations start with the number of players on the teams and the number of players fielded during the games. A four-man team, for example, cannot execute the same plays that a seven-man team can. Youngsters, sometimes as young as seven or eight years old, may not be able to deal with complex plays and maneuvers. It is important, then, for coaches and managers to make sure that the playbooks they purchase and modify are suited to the team they are managing.

Fortunately for new coaches and managers, the wheel has already been invented. It is possible to find playbooks compiled by experienced coaches that make it simple to work with even the greenest teams. Knowing and understanding the plays that others have developed provides a coach with key information and also helps the coach to develop additional plays unique to his or her own team.

The coach has the responsibility of making sure each player on the team learns the plays and gains the confidence to execute them as called. Some coaches buy 3 X 5 inch cards on which the plays are described and/or graphed so that players can take them home to learn. Using a good playbook is as essential to a flag football coach as it is to any coach in any sport. Playbooks can be obtained online, through local sporting goods stores, or through league organizations.
