Flag Football Teams

by Kathleen Gagne

There are several different ways to configure a flag football team. Team specifics will be determined by the number of players on each team, whether the team is part of an official league, the age of the players, and even the gender of the team members. While contact football teams almost always field eleven members with several on the bench, flag football teams can have as few as four players on the field or as many as eight.

A flag football team can actually be comprised of a loose-knit group of friends who want to get together on weekends. At the other end of the spectrum, a team can be made up of great athletes who are dedicated to league play at the college level or to winning a national championship. Then there are the smallest players, those six-to-ten-year-olds who want to have fun and, occasionally, win a game.

Independent or League Team?

Playing on a flag football team is a great way to make new friends or connect with old ones. For those who have never participated in team sports, flag football serves as a great opportunity to enjoy the unique experience of team play. A once-a-month romp in the park on a loosely defined field with an ancient ball and red kerchiefs as flags adds up to great fun with no stress.

Of course, those who like structure and prefer to play on a team with the same number of players for every game will probably like the league concept. Playing in a league offers unique challenges, as each team seeks to move toward the ultimate goal of earning a league championship.
