Flag Football Tournaments

by Kathleen Gagne

Even the smallest local flag football leagues can organize flag football tournaments. Those who play on the teams, no matter how relaxed the league, love to compete, and playoffs are a great way to continue the fun and earn more wins. On the other hand, tournaments are sometimes geared towards raising money for charities or funding the establishment of an official local league. With the recent advent of the NFL college flag football program, more tournaments have been established and more champions crowned.

Flag football tournaments usually follow the single elimination process. Teams are matched in the tournament based on the number of wins during the regular season. In order to progress through the playoffs to the championship match, a team must continue to win every game--until there are only two undefeated teams playing in the final match-up. The winner of the final game is the tournament champion.

Keep on Winning

Another tournament option popular with younger players is the "round robin." In a round robin tournament, each team is usually allowed at least one loss. A second loss results in elimination from the tournament. The round robin format keeps more teams involved in the playoffs and gives each player one more chance to enjoy the feeling of winning.

Some flag football leagues are spread across several states, requiring significant travel during both the season and the playoffs. In recent years, New Orleans and Orlando have hosted national championships with dozens of teams competing. These tournaments are more formally organized, and most of the participating flag football teams are already champions in their own home leagues.
