Play Flag Football

by Kathleen Gagne

Flag football at any level can be a lot of fun. From backyard games to the challenge of professional matches, there is plenty of fun to be had, and it's a great way to get healthy exercise and to bond with people who have like interests. For a more organized and structured experience, it's a good idea to check out flag football leagues in the area by contacting a local recreation department or going online to find appropriate local leagues.

It's up to the player to determine whether he or she prefers league play to park play and what the commitment will be to either one. Some leagues, particularly those run by recreation departments, may require a small fee, and the player may have to purchase his or her own gear. On the other end of the spectrum, intramural high school or college team leagues may provide the necessary gear through sponsors.

Trying out for Professional Teams

If there is a professional team in the area, tryouts are usually required in order to participate. Due to the structured schedule, more traveling may be required when playing for a professional team. Like most leagues, professional flag football is geared to winning the most games and qualifying for local playoffs in order to be able to go to a regional or national championship.

The rules for professional flag football teams are much more complex than those for other leagues, and they are strictly enforced--more officials are on the field for a professional game than are present in any other league. The major differences between contact football rules and those for professional flag football are related to specific issues revolving around the flags and contact.
