California DUI Attorneys

by Kathleen Gagne

In California in 2003, over 180,000 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). There were over 1,600 fatalities associated with persons driving while intoxicated or impaired due to drug use. Clearly, California police are making every effort to protect the public from drunk drivers, and they take this obligation very seriously.

At the same time, not all drivers who give the appearance of being intoxicated actually are. When a person is stopped and asked to take a sobriety or Breathalyzer test, he or she may be confused about what is happening and may ask to speak to an attorney. In fact, getting an experienced attorney should be one of the first things a driver facing DUI charges should do.

Experienced DUI Attorney Defined

The best DUI attorneys in California or any other state are those who are intimately familiar with the entire penal code relating to vehicle charges. If they have prior experience in any kind of police work, they will be more likely to know exactly how the system works and how to best serve a client appropriately within the system's framework. It is important to know as much as possible about an attorney's expertise in the field of DUI court cases.

Most qualified attorneys are more than happy to meet with prospective clients to discuss how they can help them. Clients should ask any questions they may have, particularly those about upcoming proceedings, both with the California DMV and with the court system. Attorneys are used to dealing with clients who are scared, and they will in turn ask questions pertinent to the case at hand. If the client does not feel comfortable with the attorney's responses, demeanor, or attitude, he or she should consider another attorney. A DUI arrest is a serious matter, and, with the client's future on the line, there must be a high level of trust in the attorney.
