Toddler Halloween Costumes

by Juliann Scholl

When children are between the ages of one and three, they explore and show interest in practically everything. One minute these toddlers are in your open cabinets; the next minute they're climbing the coffee table. Because their interest and curiosity are ever-changing, you might take the helm in selecting a Halloween costume for your toddler.

Toddlers love imagination and play. In fact, it's a toddler's "job" to play as he is testing new physical and social skills. With this in mind, you might consider costumes that unleash your toddler's imagination and creativity. Toddlers become increasingly interested in colors, textures, and shapes, so expose your toddler to costumes that incorporate these elements.

Because toddlers love exploring, take your toddler shopping for Halloween costumes. Toddlers' minds are constantly busy, and they think about and notice the objects, colors, and shapes in their environment. These observations are wonderful opportunities for you to talk with your toddler about the costumes she finds interesting.

Once you and your toddler pick a costume, it may be fun to read books or tell stories about his Halloween character, especially in anticipation of a Halloween party or an evening of Trick-or-Treating. For additional fun, consider dressing up with your toddler in matching costumes. This could be a wonderful opportunity for both of you to play together and strengthen your relational bond.

Tips for Making Your Toddler Halloween Costumes Special

Safety should be a top priority when choosing your toddler's costume. The costume should fit well enough to allow your toddler to move easily and avoid injury. Masks should not be too snug and should allow children to see out of them clearly. Costumes also should be flame resistant and easily visible to others after dark.

Even when costume safety has been considered, shopping for a Halloween costume for your toddler may seem daunting and overwhelming. For reasonable prices and high quality, it's always a good idea to look for toddler Halloween costumes online. Look for sites that offer an opportunity to compare prices among a variety of stores and shopping venues. Also, specialty stores, party stores, toy stores, and garage sales may offer excellent finds for a parent trying to save money. Baby and child clothing stores, while not the most budget-minded, are great places to look as these venues will have merchandise with children's needs in mind.

A great alternative to shopping for toddler Halloween costumes is making them. If you have a knack for sewing, you may consider shopping for a pattern for your toddler's costume. On the Web you can find patterns for entire costumes (fairy princess or robot) or smaller patterns for such things as rabbit ears or elf shoes.

If you have neither a sewing machine nor a knack for a needle and thread, there are several no-sew costumes to interest you. The Internet has websites with ideas for using such things as felt, pipe cleaners, face paint, feathers, tights, and other clothing items you may already have. Many of these costume ideas are easy to put together.
