Loan Officer Courses

by Juliann Scholl

A loan officer needs extensive training and skill refinement to be successful. Courses for loan officers are widely available in classroom format or online. There are courses for those seeking loan officer certification as well as those who wish to continue their education.

It is crucial to research the online courses available for both new or experienced loan officers. Before registering, find out whether the course fulfills state licensing and certification requirements. Some online courses count towards continuing education credit. Is this the case for the course you're considering? Be sure you know exactly what you're paying for. Although there are variations, look for courses that cover loan terminology, important aspects of credit reporting, common forms used, types of loan programs, the appraisal process, and all stages of loan application and approval.

Important Considerations Regarding Loan Officer Courses

Each state varies in terms of certification and licensing requirements. First-time loan officers should know what types of training are required by their state before they can work. Training and licensing requirements also depend on the type of financial institution for which one is working.

A loan officer needs other essential skills besides those specific to the lending industry, and should seek courses that help him or her improve these skills. Such skills includes sales, interpersonal communication, business writing, and computer competencies. Because many employers give preference to individuals who are bilingual, loan officers may find it advantageous to seek language courses to make themselves more marketable.
