US Canada MovingRelocation is almost always a difficult, time-consuming process. Relocation across an international border increases those difficulties exponentially, especially if an entire family is moving. Making a move between the United States and Canada is certainly easier than moving from either country to Brazil or Finland, but you are still crossing an international border, and will find it much more complicated than moving from state to state or province to province. Both countries are so vast that regional differences make it impossible to generalize. An American relocating to Ottawa, for example, will not have a language barrier to deal with. Americans moving to Montreal, on the other hand, will find the transition easier if they speak some French. A move from Louisiana to Alberta or vice versa will require adapting to a very different climate and geography. The political systems of the two countries are different, since the US is a democracy and Canada a constitutional monarchy. You'll need to familiarize yourself with a different system of voting in order to participate in the government of your new country. If you intend to become a citizen there, you'll need to find out what the requirements are, and how it will affect your current citizenship. The monetary system is very similar, but there are differences you'll need to adjust to. Cultural mores range as widely as do climates, so life in Halifax will be quite different from life in Regina. Educate Yourself Online about Canada-US RelocationThe more you know about the community you will be moving to, the better you'll be able to adjust once you make the move. This is especially important for families with children. Make use of the Internet to learn all you can about the town and the region. Check the local Chamber of Commerce, for example. There you will find links to local newspapers, schools, businesses, places of worship and activities. If you have children, be sure to include them in these researching activities. You will also want to research the rules and regulations that govern your move. Which of the items in your household do you need to declare and pay duty on? What items and materials may not be shipped across a border, and what may not be shipped at all? Can you take your houseplants with you? How about your dog? Are you relocating permanently or for a specific length of time? What kind of permits do you need to enter the country for an extended stay or as a permanent resident? Where can you get those permits, and what documents will you need to submit? What paperwork is necessary to transport your car? Relocation Specialists Can Help You
Companies such as U.S. Canada Moving do more, though. They will help you with visas and green cards. They offer immigration eligibility assessments and consultation. They serve as the one contact point that can help you manage the myriad documents, applications and forms that are necessary, saving you untold time dealing with various bureaucracies. They serve as a reference point for information about communities, job availability, requirements for citizenship and just about anything else you need to know. Any move is stressful, and international moves add additional layers of concern. Using the services of professionals and specialists is likely to make your move go as smoothly as possible. If you do decide to deal with documentation and regulations on your own, be certain that you fully understand your needs and prepare everything carefully ahead of time, so you don't get stopped at the border and turned away. Your new country is eager to welcome you, but it is your responsibility to be sure you are properly prepared and adequately informed. ![]() Get all Gardens articles via
