Dental Braces

by Rachel Arieff

Dental braces have been around for decades. Braces are also known as orthodontics, which, very gradually over time, move the teeth and underlying bone. Braces are useful not only to straighten teeth. They're also used to align the upper and lower jaw, which in many people are commonly misaligned.

Dental braces can also correct muscle and bone structure. This not only improves the appearance of the smile and face, but it can also prevent the development of chronic facial and dental problems. Braces can also relieve pressure on the temporomandibular joints, in a condition called "TMJ."

Who Can Benefit from Dental Braces?

Braces can correct tooth and jaw misalignment in both children and adults. Though braces are a far more common treatment for children, more adults are taking advantage of the benefits of braces. Orthodontic techniques have advanced considerably since we were children, making braces more tolerable and effective than before.

Though dental braces are an indisputably effective corrective treatment for tooth and jaw misalignment, the big drawback has always been their cost. Braces are quite an investment, requiring intricate dental work over a prolonged span of time. Fortunately, most dental plans cover orthodontic work.
