Private Health Care Insurance

by Kathleen Gagne

If you are not covered by an employer's group insurance plan, are not yet eligible for Medicare, are self-employed, or fall under any of several categories where plan health insurance is not available, you need private health care insurance. You can find this type of insurance on the Internet. There you will be able to view dozens of insurance companies' plans in much less time than it takes to call or talk to agents.

You can get private insurance plans that cover just the basics, or you can get more comprehensive plans if you expect to need private insurance long term. An example of a short-term need would be for a graduate student who has one more semester and is too old to be on a parent's plan. Long-term need occurs when you expect to be on the plan for six months or more. There are plans designed for just about every contingency you can think of.

Getting Private Health Care Insurance Quotes

Before you buy any health care insurance plan, you should study the specific benefits of several plans to make sure you are getting the coverage you need. There are several key factors you should consider when getting quotes. First, a low deductible may mean higher premiums or higher out-of-pocket total expenses per year. Out-of-pocket expenses include you monthly premiums, your deductible, and the percentage of each medical service bill you have to pay.

You should also learn whether your private insurance allows you to select your own providers or requires that you use physicians from a pre-determined list. Does the plan offer additional optional services such as eye care and dental care? What about long-term health care coverage? Can you get optional life insurance? How long will the policy be in effect, and when will coverage begin? Will you have to pay up front and then request reimbursement? Before you purchase any policy, you should have the answers to all of these questions and any others you may have.
