There are some restrictions on who can get short term health insurance. These include age limits. You cannot be more than 64 and 11 months old. Dependent children may be covered up to the age of 20 or 24 if they are full-time students. If you would be ineligible for a normal individual health insurance policy, you will not be able to get a short term policy either. Check with the insurer for other exclusions.
Short term policies are not managed health care plans so you can use any physician or hospital you choose. You will also have a choice of deductibles and of the ratio of payments. Depending on the term of the policy, you can choose from several payment options. For example, you may choose to pay for the policy in one lump sum, or you might want to make a monthly payment. Short term medical coverage policies are not renewable, and, if you need coverage for more than six or seven months, you may want to consider looking at a regular health insurance plan.
