B-25 Mitchell

The B-25 Mitchell was a bomber aircraft used in World War II by the Dutch, British, Russian, Chinese and American forces. Historians and enthusiasts alike regard it as one of the most famous and well-known airplanes of the Second World War. Nearly 10,000 of the planes were built for the war effort. You can see these and many other amazing airplanes used in World War II in museums around the country. There is a great display at the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. One of the best things about these museums is they give you a chance to take home airplane collectibles and other World War II memorabilia.

During the war B-25 Mitchell planes were often launched from Naval vessels. The men who flew these planes, and their crew were hard-working soldiers who have since been honored for their accomplishments and achievements. One of the most famous raids performed using these airplanes was the Tokyo Raid of 1942. The mission successfully restored morale to U.S. forces.

The Achievements of the B-25 Mitchell

The B-25 Mitchell has gone down in the history books for being the first aircraft to bomb the Japanese mainland. They were reliable and dependable fighting machines that served the cause of freedom well. They were also one of the heaviest aircraft to be launched from the deck of a naval vessel. This adds to the danger pilots and crewmembers endured, and the high level of skill it took to maintain and operate these planes.

These planes were quite heavy, weighing in at just over 19,000 pounds before loaded with weapons and other equipment and weighing a maximum of 35,000 when loaded. They were equipped with 12 machine guns, and could carry up to 4,000 pounds of bombs. There are about 34 of these planes still in service today.
