B-26 MarauderThe B-26 Marauder was designed to meet the Air Army Air Corps' need for a higher speed medium sized bomber plane. It was used primarily as ground support during missions in the Pacific theater by American and British forces. It could hold up to seven crewmen, and up to 3,000 pounds worth of bombs. This aircraft recorded some of the lowest loss rates of any airplane used in the Army Air Corps in Europe. Over the years the B-26 Marauder saw several modifications, including adding more machine guns to the front or nose. Several B-26 planes were equipped with torpedoes before it was determined that they were too large for effective low-level attacks on enemy ships and planes. Through the many modifications the B-26 line held onto its reputation as a faster plane that could withstand a great deal of enemy fire. Heroic Tales of the B-26 MarauderThere are several websites that are dedicated to the men who flew and cared for the B-26 Marauder line of planes. These sites display military aircraft pictures as well as stories from combat. There are some fascinating stories of survival and victory on these sites. Nothing evokes the spirit of patriotism than these heroic and endearing stories from first hand experience on the front lines of battle. A great way to honor the accomplishments of the soldiers who flew and maintained these fine military machines is to purchase aircraft merchandise. This merchandise often features illustrations or photos of the many different aircraft used in combat, and support missions. These items make a great gift for anyone who has served this country, is interested in the history of flight, or just plain has a fascination with airplanes. ![]() Get all Aviation Gifts articles via
