A-6 Intruder

by Rylee Newton

The A-6 Intruder was used as a fighter plane for all weather. Naval commanders wanted a plane that could fly for long missions in any type of weather at low altitudes. This plane would need to be self-reliant in its navigations, which meant pilots would not be using guides such beacons and other devices. This plane saw its first combat action during the Vietnam War when it was launched off USS Independence in the Gulf of Tonkin.

The A-6 Intruder was used exclusively in Vietnam, but was also used during in Libya in 1986, and during Operation Desert Storm. Equipping these planes with night capabilities as well as the all weather features made them versatile and rugged. The precision weaponry also helped these aircraft to stave off enemy fire, and the high-speed capabilities made these planes more able to escape unscathed.

Honoring One of the Greatest Military Planes, the A-6 Intruder
Many people consider the A-6 Intruder the best attack bomber ever flown by the U.S. Navy. The Intruder was taken out of active use in 1997 much to the chagrin of loyal pilots everywhere. You can view this magnificent, solid aircraft at museums around the country, including the Pacific Coast Air Museum and the Intrepid Sea-Space Museum in New York.

When you view these planes you will have a clear idea of the power behind their machinery. Maybe you've seen military aircraft pictures, but nothing compares to viewing one of these planes first-hand. If you get the chance I highly recommend the experience. Many of these museums have gift shops where you can purchase airplane merchandise to honor the men who flew and designed these great machines.
