SR-71 Blackbird

Take just one look at the SR-71 Blackbird and you'll see a jet like nothing you've seen before. It's sleek, black and looks like something straight out of the future. Which is strange since this aircraft has been around since the late '60s. This is one of the first in the line of high-speed, reconnaissance aircraft designed for the U.S. military.

The SR-71 Blackbird was in service for a total of 24 years. It was finally retired from the Air Force fleet in 1997. During is run it set several records, including a record for speed and one for reaching an absolute altitude of over 85,000 feet. These planes are so expensive that just over 30 of them have been made since the late '60s.

Unusual Facts About the SR-71 Blackbird

During its run in the U.S. military, the SR-71 Blackbird was stored at Beale Air Force Base in California. There are several unusual features of this unique aircraft. For one thing pilots can warm their feet and even food on the windows of this aircraft. When flying these machines the pilots actually breathe 100% oxygen. They actually changes nose depending on the mission. These planes can refuel in just 15 minutes, which is remarkable for a jet of this size. One of the most advanced features is the use of tiny iron balls in the paint of this aircraft to reduce enemy radar detection.
