Ambergris Caye BelizeLeisurely Life on Ambergris Caye BelizeAmbergris Caye Belize is the largest of the 200 offshore cayes, or islands, that dot the coastline of this country. The epitome of the laid-back Caribbean lifestyle, Ambergris Caye has no paved roads or traffic lights. How do people get around? Visitors take water taxis or commuter planes from the mainland; locals use bicycles and golf carts. What's the attraction? Only some of the most wondrous diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, and sailing in the Western Hemisphere! Casual and easy-going, the locals are hospitable and friendly. Typical of tropical islands, there are plenty of restaurants and bars--and discos! The 200-Mile Barrier ReefThe second longest barrier reef in the world lies off the coast of Belize. When you fly into Belize, you can't miss the dramatic white surf that marks an unbroken reef along the Yucatan Peninsula south past the border of Belize. As any experienced diver knows, reefs harbor an astounding array of fish and marine life. One of the Seven Underwater Wonders of the World, this diving bonanza provides some of the world's best underwater experiences. The western edge of Ambergris Caye Belize looks like lace work. Lagoons, bays, and inlets riddle this shoreline, but the Caribbean coast presents a more solid front with its miles of white, sandy beaches. To say there are opportunities for water sports here is ridiculous--Belize is the outdoors, and Ambergris is a water-lover's paradise. Belize dive resorts and Belize accommodations are plentiful on this Caribbean shore. ![]() Get all Latin America articles via
