Belize Scuba DivingSpectacular Belize Scuba DivingBelize scuba diving offers seemingly endless spots to explore. With the Belize Barrier Reef extending from the Yucatan Peninsula past the southern border of the country, the variety and beauty of Belize dive trips are second-to-none. Coral atolls, large and small cayes (islands), and small reefs dot the offshore Caribbean waters of this richly-endowed land. At 30 miles long, Ambergris Caye is the largest of the islands, and its main town, San Pedro, is a hub for diving activity. Ramon's Village and Tropica Beach Resort offer a range of diving courses for all levels of training. If you're an absolute beginner, you can take a supervised Resort Course in which you can practice using diving equipment in a safe environment at no more than 20-30 feet. Southern Belize DivingDangriga, Hopkins, and other villages to the south offer lazy days in the sun in the midst of the fascinating Garifuna culture. Not only can you watch drums being made, you may be able to catch a religious ceremony, which typically involves hypnotic drumming, joyous dancing, and trance states. These coastal villages are also great take-off places for diving offshore. Belize scuba diving in the south includes the Sapodilla Cayes, Gladden Spit, and South Water Caye Marine Reserve, which is the country's largest marine reserve. Tobacco Caye has intriguing spur and grove formations to investigate. The excitement at Silk Cayes is that it has the world's largest population of whale sharks from February to May. Last, but not least, is the charming Laughing Bird Caye, the smallest marine reserve in Belize. ![]() Get all Latin America articles via
