The best programs will even offer you an array of notification techniques--including e-mail, telephone, and pager. These alerts should be able to be customized and sent, regardless of the time of day or night.

Moreover, you'll want to look at the ease of use and report information that the sniffer provides. Make sure that you can generate reports in plain English, so that they are readily available and readable by your non-technical staff members. Furthermore, be sure that you have customizable filters included, so that you can isolate traffic based on port, protocol, data type, and packet and error types.
