Network Management Protocol

Network management protocol defines the standard set of rules by which your computers will communicate with one another within your network. As computers in your network begin to communicate, they must first agree on a set of definitions and means for transferring meaningful information. These definitions are contained and defined by the type of network management protocol used by your company's machines.

Types of Network Management Protocol

As your machine establishes remote connections, sends e-mail messages, and transfers files and data, it depends on the established protocol in order to accomplish these tasks between computers. The established protocol defines how the computers will exchange information, and the format that the information will take. Because of this, you will want to make sure that your network management software supports and defines your network management protocol.

For instance, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or SMTP, is used to transfer e-mail messages on some servers. HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is used to transfer information to the World Wide Web. File Transfer Protocol, also known as FTP, is generally used to transfer file information between computers on a network.

You'll want to make sure that your network management protocol is supported by the network software you choose. Luckily, some of the best network management tools will support more protocols than you could ever need for your network.
