Civil War ID Tags

by Jill Morrison

Civil War ID tags are popular and appreciated collector's items. The Civil War is known as the greatest war in American history. Therefore, Civil War memorabilia is considered to be very valuable.

The Civil War is particularly fascinating because it was fought by Americans on American soil. The war was devastating and the death toll was large. In fact, from the 3 million participants in the Civil War, 600,000 died.

Characteristics of Civil War ID Tags

Civil War ID tags are unique because soldiers had to purchase and engrave them on their own. No Government-issued ID tags were ever found from the Civil War. These original tags are considered to be very meaningful artifacts because they were hand-made by individuals in the war.

Some soldiers did not have the means or opportunity to purchase Civil War ID tags. Yet, they had the desire to be identified if their lives were lost in battle. In battles where death was very likely, some soldiers pinned pieces of paper with their names onto their coats beforehand.

Civil War ID tags were typically made from a metal plate or coin. They were attached to a chain and worn around the neck in most cases. Soldiers printed personal information on one side and war information on the other side.

Civil War ID tags as artifacts can be found in antique stores, auctions, or websites. However, they tend to be expensive and difficult to find. There are other options in collecting Civil War ID tags, such as purchasing replicas.

Replicas of original Civil War ID tags make great gifts for any history buff, war veteran, member of the armed services, historian, or military enthusiast. They can be purchased and hand-stamped with any personal information you wish to use. You will save a large amount of time and money by purchasing a replica ID tag instead of an original Civil War artifact.
