Fuel Oil Additive

by Rachel Arieff

Fuel oil additive has been used since its creation in the 1970s to make fuel oil burn more cleanly and efficiently. With the energy crisis of 1973, companies began to research new technologies to address this problem. From this research, they created the high-tech and efficient products we're familiar with today, such as synthetic motor oil and fuel additives.

Fuel oil is the result of the petroleum refinement process. When distillate fuels are removed from crude petroleum, a residual liquid remains, which is what's known as fuel oil. Fuel oil contains concentrated amounts of impurities which were originally present in the crude oil, but after refinement, are even stronger. This makes it extremely problematic to burn.

How Fuel Oil Additive Solves the Problem of Fuel Oil

Oil must burn efficiently, otherwise it'll waste money, pollute the environment, and cause machinery to perform poorly -- even to the point of damaging or ruining it. A good fuel oil additive removes contaminants such as sludge-forming unsaturates, ash, moisture, and sulphur. Other impurities present in fuel oil are tiny particles of asphalt and paraffin.

Asphalt and paraffin prevent the oil from burning efficiently which causes combustion to be incomplete. The result is excessive deposits of smoke and soot. A good-quality fuel oil additive, however, will eliminate these problems, protect your machinery, and make it run more efficiently and reliably.
