Kindergarten Crafts

by Shirley Parker

Kindergarten classes are taught in both public and private schools, some of which are related to a specific religion. In addition, those children who are home-schooled tend to learn and advance at a fast rate, with many completing high school a year or more early, and starting college at a younger age than their peers. All schools cover the basic subjects that children of kindergarten age need to learn to progress to the next grade level.

The topics covered in the different kindergarten environments may differ, but themes of responsibility and family ties tend to be similar, and crafts relate to those. In addition, kindergarten crafts may represent other members of the community, such as police and fire departments and other emergency personnel. It is our schools that teach children the history behind Presidents' Day, Columbus Day and, sometimes, Veterans' Day.

Included in the kindergarten crafts ideas in most schools are the major celebrations: Valentine's Day, Easter, Mother's Day and Father's Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some schools will only make crafts related to the secular side of holidays, while others include the religious aspects. Hanukkah and Ramadan have their own educational crafts for children, when they are in the curriculum.

Kindergarten Crafts Teach About Other Countries

Cultural diversity enriches everyone's lives. So, in addition to practicing arts and crafts from other countries, schools also teach about Martin Luther King Day. And they are beginning to incorporate lessons about Cesar Chavez Day. The latter holiday is recognized in California and Texas so far, with Arizona allowing it as an optional holiday. Crafts related to learning the alphabet and understanding biodiversity are incorporated into lesson plans, often using paper animals designed in the countries they represent.
