Remote Video Surveillance

by Kathleen Gagne

The type of remote video surveillance equipment you buy should depend on several different considerations. If you're new to the concept of surveillance, you should know that surveillance technology is changing as rapidly as all other video technology and computers. This means that you should start out looking for a system that is expandable and one that your vendor guarantees will be compatible with their next couple of upgrades.

Remote surveillance simply means that a camera is installed in an area and sends a signal, either through a cable or by wireless signal, to a monitor that can be viewed real-time by a dedicated employee and can be recorded for playback. When you're planning your system, take into account whether your cameras will be indoors or outside, whether you want the option to move them relatively frequently, and how to protect them from vandalism.

In addition to your cameras, you'll need a monitoring device. Monitors come in both monochrome and full-color models and can range in size from around 9" to 21". The former can be great in a home setting, while larger monitors work in business settings, especially if you will be banking monitors.

You will need other components such as a power supply unit and recording devices. When it comes to recording the camera feed, you can go with a VCR (video cassette recorder) or a DVR (digital video recorder). In this case, the latter will usually have more capacity and options and may cost more. It's up to you to determine which features will best suit your needs. You can find all of the components of great video surveillance systems online, along with live or online advice about how to plan and maintain your system and how to make the best use of your surveillance system and dollars.
