California Tax Return

by Kathleen Gagne

Filing Your California Tax Return

The State of California offers you several options when you're ready to file your California tax return. Since you're already on the Internet, you're probably considering the newest and easiest way to file, efiling. Beginning January 16, you can efile in California. This means that you will get your refund much faster, especially when you take the direct deposit option.

At the current time, you will still need to use an online tax filing service. You may have a national tax preparer that has that access to efiling. If you do, you may want to check out their rates before you begin your tax preparation with them. Another option, of course, is to use your own online tax filing company. The process is as simple as it can be; the support is great; and the price is right.

Snail Mail

You still have the snail mail option, of course. That means going the paper route (no pun intended). You will have to gather all the necessary documents, such as W2s, 1099s, and more, but you have to do that no matter which option you choose. With the snail mail option, however, you should make sure you have a calculator and an eraser handy, and it's a good idea to have several copies of the forms in case you totally mess up a couple.

The snail mail route also means that it takes several days for your return to even get to the right place--if it doesn't get lost! Then, when it gets there, the turnaround time can be weeks. By the time your check is in the mail, you're getting gray hair. Ok, maybe it's not quite that bad, but, if you want to save yourself some time, feel more confident that your return is done correctly, and get your refund within a few days, consider using an online tax filing vendor for your California tax return.
