New York State Income Tax Basics

As a New York resident, you are required to file a New York State Income Tax return each year by April 15. If you meet the following criteria, you must file: if you a required to file a Federal return; if your filing status is single and you can be claimed as a dependent and had an income of $3,000 or more; if your filing status is single and you cannot be claimed as a dependent and had an income of $4,000 or more; if you are married filing a joint return, filing a separate return, or head of household, or qualifying widow(er) and have an income of $4,000 or more.

If you resided in New York State for the a tax year, you must use Form IT-100, Form IT-200, or Form IT-201 to file your return. Currently, you can pay any taxes due to the State by using one of several approved credit cards, and you can pay your taxes online. You can also send a check or money order by mail. If you efile your state tax return, you can use the above credit card options, or you can use the electronic funds withdrawal option which debits your tax payment directly from your savings or checking account.
