California Hair Transplant

by Charles Peacock

Hair loss is an unfortunate reality for many men. The most common type of male hair loss is generally referred to as "male pattern baldness," but is also known by its scientific name: alopecia. This type of baldness is genetically pre-programmed and there is very little you can do to stop or reverse its effects.

Most men who suffer from hair loss feel a substantial amount of distress related to their condition. Many people (whether justified or not) associate baldness with weakness or premature aging, and those who go through the experience personally usually report at least some level of embarrassment. Because of the stigmas attached to hair loss, it is no wonder that many men try desperately to find some solution that will bring back the appearance of a full head of hair.

Facts About Hair Loss

To understand the process of hair loss it's important to first gather some facts about the human scalp and the hair that grows out of it. You may be surprised to learn that the average person has about 100,000 follicles on their scalp. The actual number of follicles varies greatly, depending on the age of the person, their hair color and their hair type.

Brown and black-haired scalps are by far the most common variety among the human population. In terms of density of hair follicles, however, this type of scalp is actually somewhere in the middle of the road. People with red hair have about one quarter fewer hair follicles on their scalps than dark haired people, while blond-haired people have about one quarter more follicles.

Hair loss, however, can occur no matter what color your hair is. And it's actually more common than you might think: 30 percent of men aged 20 to 30 years have already experienced a substantial level of hair loss. By the age of 50 or 60, at least 50 percent of men are completely bald.

Fighting Hair Loss

There are many different options for fighting hair loss, although it is important to remember that it's basically impossible to cause new hair to grow on regions of the scalp that have already become bald. Despite advances in medicine and hair growth treatments, it's still impossible to make a completely bald head return to its original level of hair growth. That's the bad news, however--and there some effective solutions to look forward to.

In the old days, men commonly fought baldness simply by wearing wigs or toupees. This isn't an ideal solution, however, since it's difficult to find a wig or a toupee that looks as good as your original hair. Recently, doctors have begun to have great success in staving off hair loss and using hair transplants to keep the scalp looking good.

Unless you're already completely bald, hair transplant procedures can go a long way towards giving you the appearance of a full head of hair. They basically work by moving active hair follicles from the back of the head (which tends to not go bald as quickly) to the front and the top of the scalp. These active follicles then continue to grow hair in the newly transplanted region.
