Hair Transplant Cost

by Charles Peacock

Medical procedures can be quite expensive, and unless you have insurance to cover them you may be quite dismayed by the out-of-pocket cost. That said, taking care of our bodies is important and many people don't mind paying to keep themselves feeling healthy and looking great. The popularity of elective and cosmetic surgery is a testament to this fact.

If you're thinking of having hair transplant surgery done, you're almost assuredly curious about how much it's going to cost. Like most elective surgery, this type of procedure is not covered by typical medical insurance. One exception would be if your scalp and hair was damaged as a result of an accident and you want to have it restored to a natural-looking condition.

Hair Transplant Costs

Hair transplant surgery is somewhat unique in that the cost really depends on how much you want done. Unlike flat-rate procedures like knee operations or eye surgery, hair transplants are priced according to the extent of your baldness and how much you want fixed. The cost is typically based on the number of "follicular unit micrografts" that you want (or need) to have transplanted.

Each micrograft usually contains one to three hairs that will be moved from the back of your scalp to a bald spot on the top or the front of your head. A typical procedure will involve the transplantation of anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand grafts. After a consultation, your doctor will be able to tell you how much each graft will cost and how many he thinks you might need.
