Hair Transplant SurgeryIf you're experiencing hair loss and are eager to do something about it, hair transplant surgery may be an option you way to consider. Hair transplant surgery basically involves moving active hair follicles from one region of your scalp to another. Because of the nature of the procedure, it is only available to people who still have active areas of hair growth on their scalp. There are several different types of hair transplant surgery available. Some doctors utilize older techniques that have been around for decades, while others take advantage of newer procedures developed in the last 10 years. There are advantages to each type of procedure, and beyond the general information supplied here you'll probably want to consult directly with a specialist to see which type of procedure is right for you. Types of Hair Transplant SurgeryThe oldest form of hair transplant surgery involves removing small sections of scalp from the back or sides of the head (where hair usually continues to grow even after the top of the head has gone bald) and transplanting these sections to the top or front of the scalp. This type of procedure is very effective for generating thick hair in the balding regions. The downside is that is has a far less subtle and natural look than newer "micrografting" procedures. Micrograft transplants basically work on a much smaller level: hair follicles are removed one at a time and transplanted individually on the recipient area. There are varying degrees of micrografting, meaning the surgeon can move single follicles individually or tiny groups of two to five follicles together. This type of transplant creates a natural looking result and is the best choice for visible hairline transplants. ![]() Get all Hairloss articles via
