Criminal reports are considered public documentation. This means that anyone requesting this information can find it through the local courthouse. If you are curious about a background check will dig up on you, there are a few steps you can take to give yourself some advance notice.

First, order a copy of your credit report. This will show all outstanding accounts, late payments and your FICO score. Some organizations will evaluate your credit score for certain positions, such as accountants. Cleaning up your credit score will help you find a better job and qualify for a mortgage.

Next, check out your local court records. Any arrests or convictions may still be accessible through the court system where your trial took place. Be sure that all the information provided within is accurate.

Lastly, DMV records, personnel files from previous jobs, and references you may have listed on any application can be used in your background checks and criminal reports. Verify the information is accurate and tell your friends and neighbors they may be questioned about you. Touching base on all these points will ensure you aren't surprised by misinformation on your background check.
