Fibromyalgia Treatment

by Norene Anderson

Fibromyalgia treatment is a subject of much debate. It has been only in the recent past that doctors are beginning to recognize fibromyalgia as a bona fide disease. Its diagnosis is more by a process of elimination of other diseases rather than a specific test or procedure that clearly defines the diagnosis. It is a common chronic condition that is indicated by tender points on various parts of the body, widespread musculoskeletal discomfort, fatigue, morning stiffness, and sleep disturbance.

It is unknown what causes the condition, but it most often affects women ages 30-50. Other symptoms that are frequently associated with fibromyalgia include anxiety, headache, and numbness or tingling. It is easy to understand the associated symptoms when there is pain and discomfort and no one can determine the cause or the remedy. For years some (and there are still some) physicians thought it was all imagined pain.

Other Proposed Fibromyalgia Treatments

The American College of Rheumatologists has determined that fibromyalgia is a real condition and the symptoms can be treated. The natural foods and supplements industry have developed and offered fibromyalgia treatments for many years. While conventional treatments include antidepressants to help induce sleep, anti-inflammatory drugs, and muscle relaxants, the natural treatments offered are SAMe 5-HTP, and capsaicin. Chlorella pyrenoidosa and a mixture of malic acid and magnesium are also being considered as treatments.
