Florida Birth Record

by Rachel Arieff

Florida birth records, such as certified birth certificates, are essential for people who were born in the state of Florida. A copy of birth certificate allows for normal functioning in daily life. Whether you need to apply for a U.S. passport, get a new driver's license, or just need a primary form of identification for work or financial purposes, the ability to present your birth record will pave the way to success in these transactions.

Florida birth records from after 1908 are more or less readily available. Birth records dated before 1908 have become part of the historical record, but they are available, albeit with a longer waiting period. If requested, these pre-1908 records will need to be retrieved from special archives, and thus take a significantly longer period of time for retrieval.

Who May Access Florida Birth Records?

The general rule, with a few notable exceptions, is that only the persons listed on a Florida birth record may retrieve these records. Two other exceptions are made for that person's immediate family, such as the parents or spouse. Also, in many states, the designated legal guardian or other legal representative may also be granted access to a particular person's birth record.

Of course, even the person named on the birth record will not be able to access it without properly filling out an official application. These applications are necessarily bureaucratic in order to protect privileged and confidential personal information from falling into the wrong hands. Once filled out satisfactorily, the application is then processed, and a certified copy of a birth certificate will delivered as soon as possible to the requestor.
