DVD current releases are usually by far the most popular video rentals, as is evidenced by the entire walls featuring multiple copies of one title that can be seen at most major video stores. Although there are some films that manage to maintain a respectable level of rental popularity over time, the demand for the most current DVD releases is overwhelming.

Movies that were successful at the box office can usually be expected to duplicate that success when released to the DVD rental market. However, many films that were overlooked in their theatrical release go on to become popular as rentals. Word-of-mouth can be surprisingly effective in enhancing the popularity of new video releases. Many films that, due to weak marketing or a poorly chosen theatrical release date, were not given public attention manage to find their audience after being released on DVD. Combined with the demand for movies that were box office hits, this makes the most current rental also the most likely to fly off the shelves.

Current DVD Rental Choices

Currently, the top movie DVD in America encompass a wide variety of genres, from animation, to documentary, to comedy, to horror. "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie," based on the immensely popular Nickelodeon cartoon series, has consistently been a top rental since its recent release on DVD. "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events," another new release, is currently the top DVD rental in the country. The film is based on a best-selling series of children's books, and is a macabre fantasy-adventure about two newly orphaned siblings trying to outwit their twisted guardian (played by Jim Carrey), as he schemes to steal their inheritance.

The action film "Elektra" is another top rental among the new DVD releases. This movie is not so much a sequel as a spin-off from 2003's "Daredevil" film, and features one of that movie's main characters. Jennifer Gardner reprises her role as Elektra, Marvel Comics' elite ninja assassin. Elektra finds herself protecting a young girl and her widowed father from an evil organization known as "The Hand." This film is a good example of a movie that's found a second life on DVD.
