Teeth Bleaching

by Jessica Duquette

Teeth bleaching can either be performed at home or through your dentist's office. Many choose to whiten their teeth due to the harsh effects of coffee, cigarette, soy sauce, red wine and other foods that tend to leave a yellow-ish tint behind. Before you decide to whiten your teeth, explore your options.

Do-It-Yourself

Whitening toothpaste may help lighten the stains that plague your tooth enamel, but they will never actually make your teeth whiter. For these results you'll need to invest in a teeth bleaching system. If you are considering a standard mouth tray bleaching system from the drug store, you may want to reconsider.

These trays do not fit your teeth snugly, hindering the bleach from accurately whitening all areas of your teeth. These loose-fitting trays may also cause you to ingest some of the bleach. Finally, the bleaching agent may have a negative effect on your gums.

Dentist-Supervised Teeth Bleaching

Your dentist will make a mold of your teeth in order to create a tray that fits your mouth exactly. This will ensure that each of your teeth is exposed to the bleach and uniformly whitened. While these professional procedures can be expensive, the results are almost always superior to the do-it-yourself versions.
