Canker Sores

by Jessica Duquette

Canker sores, otherwise known as mouth ulcers, are often no bigger than the size of a pea, yet can cause a tremendous amount of pain. If you commonly suffer from these mouth sores, there are a few preventative measures you can take. Additionally, there are several over-the-counter medications that can help control the pain.

A Common Problem

Canker sores affect more than 50% of Americans. More often than not, these sores appear in the mouth of women. If your parents were susceptible to mouth ulcers, than the chance of you getting them increases to more than 90%.

What Causes Canker Sores?

Usually these mouth ulcers (commonly referred to as aphthous ulcers) occur in adolescents. This happens because the immune system in teenagers has yet to develop entirely, making it easy breeding grounds for such sores. They also tend to occur more when your body is stressed or exhausted. Staying healthy is one way of avoiding these painful ulcers.

Studies have shown that vitamin deficiencies may cause the onset of mouth ulcers. While they are extremely painful, they are not contagious. For treatment ideas continue reading the information provided in this site.
