Canker Sore Treatment

by Jessica Duquette

Choosing a Canker Sore Treatment

Canker sore treatment can come in varying forms. From topical solutions to oral rinses, many over-the-counter treatments can eliminate the painful burn of canker sores. Finding which treatment works for you may take some time.

When your three-year-old son scrapes his knee you fasten a band-aid to his leg to keep out any bacteria. This prevents further irritation and unnecessary pain. The majority of the pain related to a canker sore is a result of the open wound. Applying a bandage to the inside of your cheek isn't exactly possible.

Liquid Bandage

A topical canker sore treatment works in the same fashion as a bandage. Both glycerin and peroxide help protect the sore and kill of any bacteria. One application might eliminate the burning pain you feel, but eventually the saliva on the inside of your mouth will wash the treatment away.

To prevent further canker sores, consider the following steps. Incorporating baking soda-based toothpaste into your brushing routine will help to ward off canker causing bacteria. Taking vitamin supplements such as C, B complex, folic acid, iron and zinc will help prevent unnecessary infection. Finally, stay away from spicy, salty or acidic foods.
