Fashion Design College Vs. Fashion Merchandising

Fashion design college differs from a degree in fashion merchandising. While the two degrees are usually offered at the same college, very few of the classes are interchangeable. In order to help you decide we have outlined the major differences below.

Fashion design college and its subsequent degree are for students interested in creating their own line of fashion. Clothing, accessories, and household decor are just some of the possibilities with a fashion design degree. Typically this four-year degree begins with basic courses in color, styles, fabrics and more.

A Designer's Work

After the first year, much of the course work is focused on personal design. You spent a lot of time in the studio sketching, selecting fabrics and sewing for the fashion show in the spring semester. This show summarizes an entire year's worth of work. It is not uncommon for talent scouts to attend these shows in order to uncover up-and-coming designers.

Fashion merchandising focuses around moving a designer's products to stores and consumers. This degree provides you with valuable information on how to market a specific line of fashion. One example of a fashion merchandising career would be a buyer for a department store.
