Finding Certified Lymphedema Therapists
Certified Lymphedema therapists are ususally people who are already involved in the healthcare profession in some capacity. Therapists can be physicians, nurses, physicians assistants, physical therapists (PTA), occupational therapists (OTA), or massage therapists. These people have an understanding of the need for proper treatment of lymphedema, and undergo courses and intensive training to become certified lymphedema therapists.
The Academy of Lymphatic Studies is the first school to offer Lymphedema Therapy Certification courses according to the European curriculum in the Continental United States. It was founded in 1994 by Joachim Zuther, who also founded The Ulmkolleg in Germany. The mission of the Academy of Lymphatic Studies is to promote high professional standards and the continuing professional competence of health care practioners by promoting the quality and integrity of continuing education to practioners in the field of Lymphedema Management.
Objectives and Goals of Certification
The main goal of certified lymphedema therapists is to provide quality care to patients who are suffering with lymphedema. This means that they need to know how to perform Manual Lymph Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy on patients. They need to know the proper techniques to use to bring about the desired results for each patient.
Certified therapists also need to be knowledgeable in proper hygience and skin care, diet, and exercise in order to properly advise their patients. Managing lymphedema is a full-time job, and it takes the work of the patient and his or her health practioners. With continued therapy, patients can have a much higher quality of life.
