Foeldi Training

by Amy Hall

Foeldi Training in North America

Foeldi training is offered at many schools in North America as well as Europe. Michael Foeldi and his wife improved on Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) in the 1980's by developing a technique called Complete Decongestive Therapy. This technique is a highly effective, painless, and non-invasive treatment for lymphedema.

Health care professionals who want to become certified lymphedema therapists can take courses to learn Manual Lymph Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy. The Academy of Lymphatic Studies in North America is one such school that you can take courses at to learn these techniques and become certified MLD and CDP therapists. Of course there are other schools around the country that teach these treatment methods as well.

What Is the Foeldi Method?

Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy is the technique referred to as Foeldi training. Health care professionals such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, doctors, and massage therapists learn the Foeldi method to better treat their patients. CDP is made up of two separate phases that work together as a whole treatment system.

Phase(1) is the intensive phase, lasting between 2 and 4 weeks. Treatments are done twice a day for five days, with the goal of this phase being to completely decongest the swollen extremity and return it to normal or near-normal size. Phase(2) is the maintenance phase which the patient does at home. CDP has four steps, which include Manual Lymph Drainage, compression therapy, meticulous skin and nail care, and remedial exercises.
