What Is Lymphedema of the Penis?
Lymphedema of the penis is often a result of surgery being performed on the lower half of the body. Cancers of the liver, kidneys, colon, abdomen, or genitalia often require lymph nodes in these areas to be removed. When ever the lymph nodes are removed, it becomes more and more difficult for the lymph vessels to properly channel the lymph throughout the body.
As a result, lymph becomes stagnant and can pool in certain areas. It is not uncommon for a patient to develop lyphedema of the penis or scrotum after such cancer surgery on the lower body. Swelling can begin in the leg and move up into the penis and/or scrotum. This condition is not only uncomfortable, but it can be embarrassing for the patient as well. It is important that any therpist treating this condition have sensitivity toward the patient's feelings and concerns.
Treating Penile Lymphedema
Again, the best approach to treating this type of lymphedema seems to be MLD and CDT. Obviously, compression garments can be worn but in such a sensitive area, it is not always successful. Patients with lymphedema of the penis are encouraged to sleep with the penis elevated at night, and to practice exceptional skin care to avoid infections.
A therapist can perform MLD to help stimulate the flow of lymph again. This alone will bring the swelling down considerably. But it may be recommended that the patient wear a compression garment of some sort to help keep the swelling down and return the penis to normal or near-normal size.
