The Pathology of the Lymphatic System
Pathology of the lymphatic system has to do with studying the diseases and malformations that take place within this system. For example, lymphedema is a disease that has either primary or secondary causes, and it makes specific areas of the body, (usually the legs or arms) swell up and become distorted. This condition is debilitating and makes every day tasks quite difficult for people who suffer with it.
Primary lymphedema is often caused by a birth defect that sometimes has no known cause. Secondary lymphedema is often the result of some sort of trauma or surgery. Post-surgery patients who had lymph nodes removed can develop lymphedema as a result of the lymphatic system being compromised. Secondary lymphedema also occurs from radiation, abdominal surgery, hysterectomy, prostate cancer, or trauma to these areas.

Lymphedema is the condition that arises when the lymphatic system does not work properly, due to missing or impaired lymph nodes.
