Treatment For Primary Lymphedema

by Amy Hall

The Best Treatment for Primary Lymphedema

Treatment for primary lymphedema involves Manual Lymph Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy, the use of compression garments or bandages, meticulous skin and nail care, as well as exercise and diet. Lymphedema is a condition that arises when the lymphatic system is not working properly, due to missing or impaired lymph nodes or lymph vessels. It can be primary in nature, meaning something within the lymphatic system is malformed, or it can be secondary, meaning it is brought on by outside factors, such as surgery, trauma, or injury.

Whether the cause is primary or secondary does not usually effect the course of treatment. Most health care professionals would agree that MLD and CDT tend to bring about the best results, in terms of the reduction in swelling and discomfort. Complete decongestive therapy also involves the use of compression garments and bandages that further reduce swelling by placing pressure on the lymph nodes and vessels, thus stimulating lymph flow.

Coping with Symptoms

Lymphedema is a debilitating disease that affects patients both physically, emotionally, and mentally. Patients with this condition often suffer from low self-image and feelings of resentment and anger. It is important that they have an outlet for these feelings, and that proper mental counseling is available if and when necessary.

Unfortunately, the treatment for primary lymphedema is an ongoing commitment that requires dedication on the patient's part. If therapy is kept regular and consistent, the symptoms of lymphedema can be managed effectively and the patient can carry on a normal life. Only when therapy is sporadic does the patient begin to develop complications from the swelling of the affected extremity.
