The basis of Vodder treatment for lymphedema is Manual Lymph Drainage, which was developed by Doctor Emil Voder and his wife, Estrid in the 1930's. Back then, the only way conditions like lymphedema were treated was to remove the lymph nodes. This actually only made the problem worse, as the lymphatic system became compromised and had difficulty circulating lymph fluid.
Dr. Vodder researched and developed MLD, which is a massage therapy that is targeted for the lymph node regions of the body. By applying gentle, sweeping strokes along the lymph nodes, they become unblocked and can then release lymph fluid into the lymph vessels for further circulation. This in turn reduces the swelling and discomfort associated with lymphedema.
Getting Relief with the Vodder Treatment
There are many reputable schools nationwide and abroad that teach the Vodder treatment method to professional health care workers, such as physicians, nurses, massage therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Students must complete at least 135 hours of class time to meet LANA requirements for certification. Students also learn the importance of compression bandaging, remedial exercises, and proper nail and skin care.
It is important for patients to understand that therapy is only beneficial when it is kept at a constant, meaning that even when symptoms are under control, therapy must continue. Getting the swelling to subside is only half the battle; keeping the swelling down is a full-time job for patients and their therapists. You will be able to effectively manage your lymphedema symptoms if you follow your therapists instructions.
