Pop Culture

by Jessica Duquette

Pop culture has a tremendous impact on the lives of young adults around the world. Teens are molded and shaped based on what they see around them. These environmental effects can be both beneficial and harmful at the same time.

Harmful Effects of Pop Culture

Magazine covers depict under-nourished women and label them as beautiful. What does this tell the generation of adolescent women? Is being skinny the only way to live? By default are women who are normal weight considered fat?

Pop culture is traditionally shaped by icons and celebrities. Today the faces of Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and Beyonce Knowles may summarize what young females today need to attain. While some of these celebrities may have solid values and morals, others encourage less than appropriate behavior for young children.

A Foundation of Value

By teaching teens the importance of Christianity you may be able to avoid potentially harmful situations that could arise from peer pressure. A core foundation of morals and values, when instilled at an early age, can help prevent misbehavior in the years ahead. Keep lines of communication open between you and your children to help alleviate the potential effects of pop idol standards.
