Engineering Plastic

by Jill Morrison

Plastic injection molding is the most common process for engineering plastic. With injection molding, plastic pellets are heated to a liquid and the liquid is inserted into a specific mold. After cooling, the product may be removed from the mold for use.

Engineering Plastic Options

When engineering plastic, it is important to consider the design of the product. Injection molding allows products to be made in various shapes and sizes. However, the design and implementation of the molding process will make a difference on the durability of the product.

There are some important factors to consider when engineering plastic. The thickness of the walls should be even all around. They can be thick or thin, but once a choice is made, they should be uniform.

It is important to make weld lines even and secure. Otherwise the product may be susceptible to cracking. Engineers will also try to round corners of products to avoid unnecessary stress.
