Injection Moulding Of Plastic

by Jill Morrison

Injection moulding of plastic is a necessary process for manufacturing plastic parts. The cost per part of plastic is very low, yet the tooling can be expensive. Plastic is best known for its versatility and economic properties that can be used in many ways.

The Process of Injection Moulding of Plastic

Injection moulding of plastic begins with plastic pellets or granules. These granules are melted with heat and placed in a mold where it can cool in a particular shape. After cooling, the part can be removed from the mold and the cycle may be repeated.

Uniform wall thickness is a concern in injection moulding of plastic. Uneven wall thickness may cause problems for the plastic manufacturer. You can simplify cost and manufacturing time with uniform design of walls and cross section.

Weld lines should be considered in the process as well. Weld line locations are more likely to have problems with cracks and stress failure. The design and the molder in welding will determine whether weld lines will be an issue in injection moulding.
