Shielding

by Jill Morrison

Shielding is a protective agent for electronic components. It will guard electronic circuits from noise interference. This is possible because the shield material, or coating, contains signals emitted by components.

Shielding is primarily used to prevent interference from RFI and EMI noises. RFI stands for Radio Frequency Interference and EMI stands for Electro-Magnetic Interference. Both noises are created when spikes in electronic signals are present.

Types of Shielding Materials

There are a few different types of shielding materials to choose from. Depending on the type and size of your component, you can choose the appropriate type of coating. Popular types of coatings include tape, foams, elastomer gaskets, and sheeting.

All materials used for coating have electrical properties and are very protective. Coatings are used to protect components from radiated electromagnetic interference and electrostatic discharge. Many conductive pigments are used to guard components from harsh conditions.
