Gold Stock

by Kathleen Gagne

Some people like to feel the weight of solid gold coins in their hands. For many inexplicable reasons, throughout the centuries, the soft glow and the warm feel of burnished gold have filled men and women alike with a desire to possess its beauty. And, to make gold even more alluring, gold has, at the same time, represented wealth. Today, if you want to own gold, you can get started in gold investment, and one option you have is to buy gold stock which is traded like any other stock in the open market. A gold stock is a publicly owned company whose business is to mine, refine, and sell gold.

You can buy gold stock through a brokerage the same way you buy stock in other businesses. And, just like any other stock, gold should not be the only stock you hold--if you buy it, gold should be part of a balanced portfolio. This is true even though gold has performed well consistently for longer than just about any other stock.

Understanding How to Buy Gold Stock

There are a lot of companies out there that own dozens of gold mines, and you will want to buy stock in one of the larger ones so that the failure of a single mine (due to natural, political, or other causes) will not have a drastic effect on your stock. Owning stock in gold mines is not as secure as owning gold coins, for example, whose value will remain constant because they are backed by the country that minted them. The possibility that other market factors can affect the value of your gold stock is a good reason to diversify, not only your general stock portfolio, but also your gold portfolio.

You should know that the economic forces that determine the price of gold are not usually the same ones that affect other markets. In fact, in many cases, gold moves in the opposite direction from the rest of the market. This is an excellent reason to diversify with gold stock because it adds a unique balance that may keep your portfolio relatively stable in times of market strife.
