Collecting Child Support

by Jessica Duquette

Collecting child support is rarely as easy as opening up your mailbox each month to the absent parent's check. These payments are seldom on time if made at all. This can force the custodial parent into financial turmoil during the growth of her children.

If Only It Were That Easy

If collecting child support were easy, the uncollected $92 billion from last year would have been delivered to its rightful owner, more than 20 million children in the U.S. alone. These statistics are on the rise. Additionally, more and more children are being raised in poverty-like conditions.

If you are unsatisfied with the effort your state worker is putting forth, there may be something you can do about it. Research your state laws to find out whether you can accept aid from a third party agency. These people may be able to track down the absent parent and help you collect your rightful money.

Why Collecting Child Support Is So Important

With a more than 70% return rate, you have a much better chance of recovering your money in time for it to benefit your children. School uniforms, books, food and clothing are becoming more expensive. Without this additional help, even a basic upbringing is beginning to look like a far-fetched dream.
